Casshern and Steamboy? :-)
Real life hmm.. ok Grave of the Fireflies (watch this on a down night as
you *will* be depresssed),
Samurai 7 on IFC based on Kurosawa's Seven Samurai

of course there is all the wonderfull stuff on Adult Swim on the
weekends. I personally love Big O, Venture Bros., Aqua Teen Hunger Force
(not really anime per se) and Sea Lab 2021. I am starting to get into
Bleach and Fullmetal Alchemist. My kids like Trigun, FLCL (aka Fooley
Cooley), Bubblegum Crisis, FUFUMO and Fullmetal Panic. Wolf's
Rain/reign? was interesting and dark. Also already mentioned Ghost in
the Shell (a lot of crossover anime fans come from this one), and
Metropolis is one my most fav. You can't go wrong with anything by Hayao
Miyazaki (the Japanime Ralph Bakshi). Some of the ones I am looking
forward to watching: Kite, The Place Promised, Last Exile, Laine, X,
Escaflowne, Gunsmith Cats, Samurai Gun and Gunslinger Girl. Appleseed
(movie) is *very* good and realistic and a great soundtrack to boot
(Katayama did Big O as well). Akira was ok and has some great voice talent.
Also for Christmas time I highly recommend Tokyo Godfathers!
Knowing how much you like Underworld and stuff like that you would
probably like Witch Hunter Robin and Vampire Hunter D. There really is
sooo much anime out there that I have barely scratched the surface (just
the rich top cream). Go over to Sci-Fi city and rent some stuff on the
shelves but even they are years behind. There is a lot of good stuff
eben in Netflix. And of course next years FX Show will be a good sample
spot.
