Depends on what kind of RAID.  RAID[345] are always better done in
hardware unless your controller is just plain lame.  RAID0 is usually
better done in software while RAID1 is usually about the same either
way.

The only time I have seen someone do a combination is when they make a
bunch of hardware RAID1s and stripe them together with software RAID0.
That was how the EMC at Maxcess worked.
