I wouldn't call that a ripoff both Sturges and Kurosawa have said in
interviews they admire each others work. And clearly it was based on 7S
that was not a secret from the beginning. To show you how competitive
leading men were in those days in the opening scene where the undertaker
is afraid to bury a native American (I can say that I are one in part)
the script called for Steve McQueen (then a newbie on the scene) to grab
the carriage and ride up to the cemetery on the hill and then Yul
Brenner was to turn around and follow him. Well not to be out staged by
a newcomer Yul decides to steal the scene by cocking the Remington and
jumping on the carriage as it went along (completely not in the script).
According to what I read Sturges was miffed but left it in the final
copy. From that moment on the two never got along. BTW all of the
Sturges movies I have ever seen are fantastic. Kinda of like John Ford,
nice panoramic shots and great to the point stories.
