I don't think that's the point, and that's coming from a guy who probably 
would have been a radio amateur in his teens if it hadn't been for the code 
requirements.

If there's a severe disruption of our society, (think EMP or 500% economic 
deflation with attendant depression), nice microprocessor equipped radios 
with surface mounted components might not be available. It's always possible 
we could be knocked back to spark gaps, and in such a possibility, however 
remote, I'd feel more comfortable with a large population knowing Morse Code, 
especially the population that operates radio transmitters.
