I used to work for Pre-Paid Legal Services (coughSCAMcough) and their
founder used to say that 10% of Americans didn't need legal insurance
because they were rich and could afford to pay full price for a
lawyer, and 10% didn't need it because they poor and would get their
legal needs covered for free; that our market was the other 80%. I
think something similar holds true for medical insurance. Most people
don't use it nearly as much as it costs them, and in fact those of us
who do go to the doctor really often are a major factor in driving the
costs up for everybody, including ourselves.

I don't think you can even begin to compare pre-paid legal services to health insurance. I don't know anyone who actually says they don't need health insurance because they never get sick. Everyone I know would prefer to have at least some insurance.

If we were a healthy nation, then I might be able to agree with you. But we aren't. Diabetes, heart disease, and many other debilitating illnesses are on the rise, not decline. Not to mention mental illnesses. Without health insurance to help cover the costs of life-sustaining medications, many people simply can't survive.

People without insurance get sick but instead of being able to go to the doctor to get the medication they need to get well, they remain sick longer and spread it to more people. How many people go to work sick because they don't want to catch crap from their boss about being out or can't afford to miss work? That doesn't even begin to cover "preventative" care that is needed but neglected because people don't have insurance. Preventative care can reduce, or in some cases even eliminate, some health care costs that end up costing everyone more in the end because it goes undiagnosed and/or untreated to so much longer.
