Strange.  I've used Bellsouth DSL for years now and the anonymous smtp 
stopped working for me last year at some point.  I used it alot to send 
pictures and docs.  I went around in circles with tech support asking them 
why they didn't allow for people on their own network.  They said I had to 
start using SMTP authentication for their gateway regardless.  I replaced 
apps with ones that do SMTP Auth and all was well.

Following your message, I just tried sending email through 
mail.bellsouth.net without username/password auth and it works great now!

Frustration and happiness is flowing now.
