Ah, this brings to mind an excellent book I would recommend, Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. Gives an interesting viewpoint on the hunters versus gatherers concept and how once we became hunters we began to squander our resources. Also hints at this was the beginning of control with the human species. Highly recommend if you are open to examining new avenues of thought. I have it if anyone is interested in reading it.
