I agree. This is completely out of hand. People don't show up to smaller places with live music to hear the specific songs by original artists. They are showing up to hear music in general. Now, if the band/artist/location doing/hosting the performance is promoting the music via the artist songs/name, then that might be different. But if it's somebody doing a mish-mash, especially if they aren't being paid, then that's just plain crazy! Something advertised as "Live Music" would be okay versus "Live Music featuring songs of Jimmy Buffett" which is using the artist name/songs to promote themselves.
Maybe if the artists stopped charging $75/ticket to see them live, they'd get more concert attendees. Also, they did themselves in when they agreed to allow people to purchase single tracks via iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc. Now, they don't get the $15 for a CD with one or two songs you want. Now they get 99 cents for that one song. Great for the consumer, but not so good for them if they only have one or two good songs. THAT'S what they are REALLY losing money on.
