My IPOD HDD issue wasnt the HDD at all. The LiPo pack inside had puffed up and was pressuring the top of the drive case so it wouldn't spin up. Kudos to seagate drives for putting up with it. I popped the LiPo pack with a pin, released the air, packing taped over the hole after it was flat again and away I go :).
