Put it on lay-away. Don't pick it up before the store closes. Write to them demanding your merchandise. See how long it takes to resolve and estimate how much it cost them. You can apply for up to two $40 coupons per household, either by visiting the official site launched on January 1, http://www.dtv2009.gov/, or calling 888-DTV-2009. Printed applications will also be available at post offices and at public libraries, in English, Spanish, and other languages. Starting February 18, 2008, the government will send coupons by U.S. mail in the form of a gift card that consumers can use at electronics retailers that sell the digital-to-analog converter boxes. You'll have approximately three months to redeem the coupon. So far, only Digital Stream, LG Electronics, and Philips have converter boxes that are approved by the NTIA, and only LG and Philips have announced actual products. The boxes are expected to cost between $59 and $69 dollars. Hmmm, and then return those boxes to the store and use that $80 on something cool... -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... On the face of it it sounds like he was doing something he shouldn't have been doing. But on the other hand... my son. He's 11 so when he signs up for something we use an email address that goes to both of us. He's into World of Warcraft and they sent him a TOS violation notice. The incident was well spelled out, but the consequences were vague. They accused him of spamming having typed in a paragraph of random words 171 times in 1 minute and 42 seconds. Even if he used copy-n-paste, there's no way he could've done that. And secondly, during the time of the violation we were downstairs watching Animal Planet with plans to flip over to ABC to watch the ball drop. I responded to them and so far I don't have a response from them. I asked my son to change his password. But this brings me to my rant. Companies that treat their customers like the enemy. Sorry, I forget your name, the dude here who is losing his Brighthouse account. Your incident reminded me of something I had seen, but couldn't recall until the other day. I was watching a news program (20/20 maybe?) and they had a CEO of a bank who has been made famous because he "fires" his customers. He was saying "Everytime you call my toll-free number, you cost me money. Everytime you log into my website, you cost me money." If he feels you're calling too often, accessing your account via the web too often, depositing too much cash and checks (he prefers just direct deposit), he'll "fire" you. I could not believe the arrogance. He works for the customers, not the other way around. I've read stories (comp.dcom.telecom, Slashdot, MSM, etc.) where Sprint PCS has gotten rid of "troublesome" customers as has AT&T DSL. Are we really to the point where it's a privilege to have a checking account, cell phone, or broadband service? Here's my wild theory. It's the Wal-Mart effect. During the late 90's we had the unusual circumstance of rising salaries and falling prices. We got really used to that. Something had to give. Customers have voted with their wallets. They prefer discount stores like Wal-Mart to more expensive full-service stores like Circuit City (prior to them firing all of their knowledgeable staff). In order to compete, businesses have to cut to the bone. It ties up resources when a customer complains, so it's easier just to get rid of the customer than to address the problem. For every customer they ditch there's a dozen just waiting to do business. I was watching another news show where they followed John Edwards on the campaign trail. His mantra these days is going after "corporate greed". I've been around long enough to know that's Democratese for "tax the beejezus out of industries we don't like such as defense and energy companies". But I'll admit it struck a nerve with me. I see these huge near monopoly industries raking in cash, giving little customer support, and treating us like we're mere annoyances. While I'm smart enough to see through Edwards' rhetoric I wonder how many out there aren't? Right now I'm doing battle with Dell.com. My wife ordered a Nokia N810 for me for Christmas. The ship date went from before Christmas to 01/18 to 01/03 to order cancelled without any explanation at all. I called yesterday, but was on hold too long. I emailed them but so far I've had no response. Sigh. What I personally think of as Capitalism works only in the absense of monopolies. That's the only way Adam Smith's invisible hand does its thing. Look at the problem areas: Healthcare: The governments over-restriction of who can administer medical care creates a doctor shortage, and the rest is history. Prescription Drugs: The government bestows a 17 year monopoly, and we all know by 17 years the drug is either obsolete or germs have adapted. Possessing a monopoly, the drug company marks the medicine up by five orders of magnitude. The real slap in the face is that taxpayer dollars paid for a lot of the research on privately monopolized drugs. Cable/landlines, etc: Local government gives a company a monopoly on the last mile, so now the company can profit nicely from crappy service. Windows: The government refused to enforce the Sherman and Clayton antitrust acts, with predictable results. Cellphones: Government auctions limited, expensive frequencies. Also, the government does not enforce anti-bundling (why should company A's cell phone not work on company B's network?). If monopolies were ever eliminated, my politics would be a lot closer to yours, Kevin K, Kevin I, and even Shawn (Red State) McMahon. And if there were no monopolies, the only companies that would treat us like annoyances would be those with prices so low it's an offer we can't refuse. In those cases the standards are clearly defined. There's a time limit and this is it and it applies to all. That's fair. But saying "if you check your account balance too many times I'm going to fire you" doesn't tell me a thing. Why not rather say you get 10 free balance queries and after that they charge? That's fair. I personally think people resort to blogs and forums to badmouth a company because customer service has gotten so bad. I see customer versus company just escalating.
