Why is > broad band still so expensive? I think this is several different situations. If you live in Texas it isn't expensive at all -- it was about twenty bucks a month when I visited Texas in 2004. Here in OTown, Brighthouse is 45 bucks a month (7mbs down), which I consider expensive. However, when I got broadband 3 weeks ago, I was able to save 34 bucks a month on my second phone line (I didn't realize it was that expensive, or I would have gotten broadband earlier). However, when someone lives in the boonies, or in an area without competition (here where I live we have a choice between Brighthouse and Embarq), it could run up to 3 figures for lousy service. That can be a budget buster. Besides the money issue, there's the lock-in issue. If you go Embarq for high speed, you sign up for a year and pay a substantial early termination penalty. At 40 bucks a month, if Embarq gives lousy service, you could be out almost a thousand bucks the second you sign the contract. Brighthouse is different -- I can quit them any time I want, and as long as I return their modem, I pay only for the months I used. That was by far the most important factor in my choosing Brighthouse over Embarq. If Embarq had been month to month, I'd have gone with them a year ago. I had another motivation for staying with dialup -- competition. I can name you 10 suitable dialup vendors, and could probably research another 40. The competition keeps prices low, and when quality lags, you just switch. With broadband, in my neighborhood there are two choices: Brighthouse and Embarq. If I get mad at one, I have only one place to go. If I get mad at both, I'm out of the game unless I move. There's another issue, and I think you guys can understand. You know how software has bloated over the years, and you've had to spend more money on machines and endure ever more glitches because it's bloated? Websites have bloated too. The average pissant info website today has hundreds of thousands or millions of bytes of gratuitous, unnecessary graphics. If a guy in rurual North Dakota or Ethiopia can't read it, what do they care? There's a part of me that resents the hell out of that, and I basically boycotted slow downloading sites. The trouble is, eventually even the sites I really needed on a daily basis (paypal for instance) took a minute to download, cramping my productivity. Like it or not, I had to go broadband. As a webmaster, I want to make sure that Troubleshooters.Com is snappy on a 44kbs connection. One way to do that was to test it on dialup. In summary, I don't think resistance to broadband is one size fits all. Cost is certainly a factor, especially in rural areas and areas with only one broadband vendor. There are other factors, must of which have to do with the fact that a handful of organizations have a monopoly on the last mile. Code-named "It's got what plants crave," this release contains numerous new features including an updated installer [1], improved hardware support, a complete rework of profiles, and a move to Xfce instead of GNOME on the LiveCD. LiveDVDs are not available for x86 or amd64, although they may become available in the future. The 2008.0 release also includes updated versions of many packages already available in your ebuild tree. ~ * Updated installer: The installer now only performs networkless ~ installations using the packages and ebuild tree on the LiveCD. It also ~ contains numerous fixes for extended and logical partitions. ~ * Improved hardware support: Moving to the 2.6.24 kernel added many new ~ drivers for hardware released since the 2007.0 release. ~ * Complete rework of profiles: Restructuring profiles allowed ~ significant cleanup of redundancies, reducing developer maintenance and ~ confusion. The difference for you is that profiles now appear in ~ /usr/portage/profiles/ under default/linux/ instead of default-linux/. ~ See the upgrading guide [2] for more details. ~ * Xfce instead of GNOME on the LiveCD: To save space, the LiveCDs ~ switched to the smaller Xfce environment. This means that a binary ~ installation using the LiveCD will install Xfce, but you're still free ~ to build GNOME or KDE from source. ~ * No LiveDVDs on x86 or amd64: In the interest of getting the release ~ out, the release engineering team [3] decided to postpone LiveDVDs ~ because of problems in their generation. They may show up later???if so, ~ we'll let you know. ~ * Updated packages: Highlights of the 2008.0 release include Portage ~ 2.1.4.4 [4], a 2.6.24 kernel, Xfce 4.4.2, gcc 4.1.2 and glibc 2.6.1. A big thanks goes out to our release engineering team members [3] for their hard work over many months to turn 2008.0 into reality. Get the new release from our "Get Gentoo!" page [5]. Before I did this expansion I managed to make a second copy of everything on there by filling up pretty much every other disk I own. Much of the data that isn't normally backed up is also archived to CD/DVD discs but recovering from that would be a pain. I paid $520 for it back in November. At that price tag I can't justify having a spare as RAID controllers very rarely fail. If they start to disapear from the market or if the next model that Areca releases isn't backwards compatible I will reconsider that descision (they will probably be cheaper by then too). The reason I went with such an expensive controller is that only the top of the line controllers can handle the online RAID expansion. With a lesser controller (3Ware 8xxx, Adaptec, etc) I would have had to backup, reformat, and restore the data. I actually planned ahead for this situation. I bought an 8-port card with only 4 drives knowing that I could expand it later as needed and when the 1TB disks would be cheaper than they were back in November. By the time I have it full (7TB of RAID5) I should be able to start upgrading to 2TB disks. The only really scarry part of this process is that fdisk can't work on disks >2TB because the DOS partition tables it creates can't deal with it. You have to make a GUID Partition Table (GPT) and only parted (and the GUI wrappers for parted) can make those. I really don't like the way that parted works tough. It tries to be a Partition Magic but fails completely. BTW, they make a PCI Express version of my RAID controller now. They also have models from 4 to 32 ports. - -- ~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~ Kevin Korb Phone: (407) 252-6853 Systems Administrator Internet: FutureQuest, Inc.
