In ours you could probably get away with that indefinitely anywhere
except our floor, where several of us have stopped people with no
visible badge only to learn they were Vice Presidents.  :)

With all the re-orgs, a couple of people have stopped somebody only to
learn he's their boss's boss.

You could get away with it on our floor too, just not indefinitely.
