I tend to agree pattern matching is definitely Perl's long suit. And I
also agree Perl's worst enemy is real-time or high-performance
environments. I recently implemented a large Nagios site but the
developer wrote a large webinject Perl script that is invoked every
normal_check_interval for 300 some odd school districts. Holy cow is
it bringing the host to it's knees. When I get back I will have to
re-write it in C or something more efficient.
